Tech Tip #12.001
02/14/91
Problem:
Power consumption on Voyager motherboard.
+5V Current Limitation.
The Power Connector on the motherboard has 4 +5V connections, each
of these is rated at 5amps of continuous current. The maximum
current that can be drawn on the Voyager at +5V is 20amps.
EISA/ISA Specifications:
Maximum current that can be drawn on 1 I/O slot is 4.5amps at +5V.
So, The maximum current that can be drawn on an EISA/ISA board is
equal to:
8 X 4.5amps = 36amps max.
Of this amount, the motherboard draws about 5 - 7 amps on +5V,
fully loaded condition.
Therefore on current Voyager boards, the max current available for
I/O cards is about 13 - 14 amps.
